The department of mechanical engineering was established during the academic year 2004-2005 with an initial sanctioned intake of 60 students which was later increased to 120 [2 batches ] . The department currently conducts 4year B.Tech programme in Mechanical Engineering , affiliated to M.G University , Kottayam . Plans to launch an M.Tech programme with specialization befitting the current industry standard is on its way.
Mechanical engineering is a conventional branch of engineering and is essential for wide range of activities like design, development, manufacture, control and management of Engineering systems, subsystems and components. Mechanical Engineers are widely employed in automotive, manufacturing, aerospace, power generation and processing industries, making immense job potential.

Chithra N.V completed her B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from M. A College of Engineering, Kothamangalam and holds M.E in Manufacturing Engineering. She is pursuing her Ph.D.She also obtained PGDIM and PGDHRM.She started her teaching career in 2003 and has been working at SNMIMT since 2007.

The General workshop comprises of fitting shop, carpentry shop, foundry shop, smithy shop ,welding shop and sheet metal. The facility is used mostly by first year students of all branches
The machine shop is equipped with all geared headstock, lathe machines, universal milling machines, shaping machines, slotting machines, radial drilling machines, grinding machines and universal tool & cutter grinders. Sophisticated measuring instruments like tool dynamometers, dial indicators, vernier calipers, micrometers and vernier bevel protractors are also available for use.
The fluid mechanics laboratory is having a variety of experimental setups like flow meters, notches and weirs, measurement of pipe friction and measurement of minor losses. The lab is used by second year mechanical engineering students as part of their curriculum.
The mechanical engineering laboratory comprises of test equipments for various vibration measurement, gyroscope, whirling of shafts, governor apparatus, reciprocating air compressors, rotary air compressors, centrifugal blower and balancing equipments for static and dynamic balancing. Final year mechanical engineering students conduct experiments in this laboratory.
The laboratory is equipped with machines like Pelton Turbine, Francis turbine, Kaplan turbine and a variety of pumps, like centrifugal pump, reciprocating pump, gear pump and jet pump. The lab is used by second year mechanical engineering and electrical engineering students.
This laboratory comprises of multi cylinder petrol engine test rig, single cylinder diesel engine test rigs, computerized diesel engine test rigs, two stroke engine test rig, Bomb calorimeter, Redwoods and Say bolts viscometer , Cleveland’s and Pensky Martins flash and fire point apparatus and also cut models of different engines. The facilities are used by third year mechanical engineering and second year electrical engineering students.
Equipments like heat exchanger apparatus, heat transfer through composite walls , heat transfer in natural and forced convection, lagged pipe apparatus , insulating powder apparatus, emissivity measurements, refrigeration test rig, air-conditioning tutor are available in this laboratory and is used by final year Mechanical engineering students.
This laboratory is equipped with sophisticated and state of the art equipments used commercially for measurement of various process parameters, like temperature, speed, displacement, pressure, strain, force and fluid flow. The equipments are thermocouples, thermistors, stroboscope, pressure gauge testers, sine bars and slip gauges, exhaust gas analyzers, strain gauges, Rota meters, water meters, anemometers, vernier bevel protractors, profile projectors, tool maker’s microscope and surface roughness testers. The facilities are used by final year mechanical engineering and third year instrumentation and control engineering students.
Manual design and manufacturing processes have give in way to computerized processes. The cad/cam centre is having CNC trainer lathe, CNC trainer milling machine and 30 systems with soft wares for facilitating CAD/CAM activities. The centre is capable of taking up outside CAD/CAM job on consultancy basis.
The department library offers an extensive range of resources and services to support the educational and research needs of students and staffs. The Library is open to all mechanical students and staff from 9 a.m to 4.20p.m on all working days. Its collections include over 300 titles covering all major fields of Mechanical Engineering. Readers can search any of the books available in the library.
